Outdoor Burning
• Ensure the open burning is ok with your neighbours. We receive numerous complaints from neighbours about smoke
entering their house, ashes on clothes hung outside.
• The burning area must be well away from buildings, long grass and brush.
• The fire must be supervised at all times by an adequate number of people who are also able to safely contain and extinguish the fire.
• There must be enough water and tools(shovels etc.) at the fire to extinguish it.
• The smoke cannot go over any travelled road.
• DO NOT burn when it is windy!
• DO NOT burn while a burn ban is in place! You will find out if there is a burn ban in place when you call for permission from the Chief or Deputy.
• NEVER, burn any type of garbage or building materials. This includes paper and cardboard. Recycle, take it to our land fill sites.
• Incinerators (Burn Barrels)can not have any holes in them, and must have a heavy mesh screen on top with openings no larger than ¼ inch.
2.6.3.4.(1) Open –air burning shall not be permitted unless approved, or unless such burning consists of a small, confined fire, supervised at all times, and used to cook food on a grill or barbeque.
What does this mean for you? You must get permission from the Chief or Deputy Chief of the Augusta Fire Department prior to burning. Do this by calling Station #1 at 348-3455, 48 to 72 hours prior to the time you wish to burn. You may need to leave a message, the Chief or Deputy will return your call.
The Ontario Fire Code States:
What are some of the rules for opening burning in Augusta Township?
Even if you receive permission to burn, you are still responsible for any damage the fire causes, and for the extinguishment due to loss of control or fire spread. The cost of extinguishment is $350.00 per hour, per Township Owned Vehicle. For burning without permission you could be charged under the Fire Code and face a fine of up to $20000.00
